Installed panels & pipework

Office for National Statistics

Project

ONS Solar Thermal Installation

Contract Period

February 2012 - March 2012

Project value

£140,000 M&E Project

The client

The Office for National Statistics have their principle site in Newport South Wales with other locations being London and Titchfield, near Portsmouth. They run the UK Census on behalf of the UK Government and are the governments source of statistical information relating to the UK.

The project

The site has over 800 staff working from the various campus buildings. The client was looking for a way to reduce the demand on fossil fuels to heat the water used daily for the kitchens, toilets and showers on site. A design was undertaken by Mitie FM and PJE Engineering sucessfully tendered the supply and installation of the forty two solar panels, pipework and plant room modifications required to connect into the existing calorifiers on site. The controls were linked into the site BMS system to enable maximum use of the panels to heat the water in place of the gas and biomass boiler on site. To ensure the pipework remained level to avoid any air pockets forming, the pipe brackets were installed using a laser level as the flat roof had ridges and dips across the entire surface. The installation of the panels was also carried out using the same methology.
